"As impressive as anything I've seen in the theater, powerful and hilarious. I don't usually cry at the theater. It's not my style, plus I see a lot of plays. Yet there I was Sunday afternoon, tears rolling down my face at the end of Fences at American Stage...Contains a constellation of superb actors stylishly directed by Timothy Douglas. Evander Duck Jr. gives a riveting performance and Jayne Trinette's performance of Rose's speech on marriage is an astonishing tour de force. Ron Bobb-Semple is overwhelming as Troy's brain-damaged brother...The scenes between Troy, his wife, children and best friend have the weight of Shakespearean tragedy."
- John Fleming, St. Petersburg Times

"American Stage Theatre Company has hit another home run with Fences. Director Timothy Douglas realizes the full potential of August Wilson's work and Evander Duck, Jr.'s performance soars."
- Kathy L. Greenberg, Tampa Tribune

"4 STARS. Kudos to American Stage for producing another of Wilson's great dramas, and a standing ovation for Evander Duck, Jr., for finding the giant in troubled, wrong-headed, radiant Troy Maxson. Director Timothy Douglas does a first-rate job of balancing the emotional highs and lows of the play. Jeffrey W. Dean's set, a realistic exterior of the two-story, run-down brick Maxson home, could hardly be better, and Saidah Ben Judah's costumes are just right."
- Mark Leib, Creative Loafing

August Wilson's towering masterpiece Fences won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for “Best Play.” Set in 1957 Pittsburgh, it tells the story of Troy Maxon, a Negro League baseball player whose prime came before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. When Troy’s rapid rise ended, he is forced to let go of his dream and later deal with his headstrong football-player son who has a chance to go so much further than he did. Fences explores what holds families together - and drive them apart - in a powerful story filled with humor, love, hope, failure, and triumph. Some mature language.

Renowned director Timothy Douglas will head this installment of American Stage's productions of the August Wilson "Century Cycle". Douglas directed the world premiere of August Wilson's final play, Radio Golf, at the Yale Repertory Theatre.

"We are very excited to continue our yearly tradition of being the only theatre company of our size to produce every one of August Wilson's ten plays over ten years," said Todd Olson, American Stage's producing artistic director. "Fences is one of Wilson's most prestigious plays, and I can't wait for our audiences to see what we have planned for them."

Fences stars Kim Sullivan as Jim Bono, Evander Duck Jr. as Troy Maxson, Jayne Trinette as Rose, Reginald Kent Robinson Jr. as Lyons, Ron Bobb-Semple as Gabriel, Travus Lerox as Cory and Trinity Edwards as Raynell.
