SOME TRADITIONS ARE WORTH SAVING - HELP US KEEP PARK ALIVE!

American Stage in the Park: A Springtime Tradition in Tampa Bay

For nearly 40 years, American Stage in the Park has been a beloved part of life in St. Petersburg — a joyful tradition that invites our community to gather each spring for live theatre under the stars at Demens Landing Park, right along the downtown waterfront.

How It All Began

The tradition started in 1986 when American Stage presented Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew in Demens Landing Park.

Those early performances were simple and full of heart: ten free shows built with donated materials, powered by volunteers, and enjoyed by families sharing picnics under the open sky. Nearly 8,000 people attended that first season — and a beloved tradition was born.

Over time, what began as Shakespeare in the Park grew into large scale musicals and contemporary productions, bringing together a vibrant community of artists.

A Tradition That Matters to Our Community

American Stage in the Park isn’t just a show — it’s a community experience enjoyed by locals and visitors every spring.

People spread blankets on the grass, enjoy picnics with friends and family, and settle in as the sun sets and the stage lights go up. It’s a place where generations come together, from young children seeing their first live show to longtime residents making memories year after year.

And the impact goes beyond entertainment. American Stage in the Park…

Draws thousands of audience members to downtown St. Pete

Supports local shops, restaurants, and nightlife.

Creates an inclusive cultural space where theatre feels accessible and joyous.

WHY WE'RE SAVING PARK

Today, rising production costs have put this cherished tradition at risk. Producing theatre of this scale outdoors is costly, often exceeding $600,000 each year. Ticket sales alone can’t cover what it takes to bring these productions to life.

Join us to save the magic for generations to come.
